Usually, weather changes with a period of three or four days in the autumn season. However, it does not apply to in this year. この時期は3日から４日の周期で天候が変わるのが常だが、初旬の日曜日以降2週間ほど北アルプスは雲の中であった。３日前の土曜日の天気予報によれば関東は一日中曇天とあった。成田からの帰宅途中東京駅と立川駅の間で車窓に幾筋も雨粒が走るのを見た主人はひょっとすると山は雪だろうと想像した。日曜日の朝は快晴で乗鞍岳の山頂がうっすらと白くなっているのを見た主人は三段紅葉になっているかもしれないと心弾ませて白骨温泉に向かってハンドルを握った。万年雪の上部に薄っすらと新雪が広がっていた。
